I’ve been friends with Nathan Marcelin for a little more than a year now, we first met while coming together for the short lived CNTRLR musical project. We linked up afterwards to shoot his first music video for his track S.D.H.F. (which we later abandoned, sorry Nate!)
After abandoning the S.D.H.F. video due to numerous scheduling conflicts, Nathan reached out to do some work for his new EP Stress and Cold Sweats. Nathan wanted new photos for promotional material as well as his album cover. After listening to some advance tracks from the EP and getting some feedback on the vibe he was feeling I really wanted the photos to have somewhat of an urban fashion editorial feel.
We decided to head out to downtown Port of Spain on a Sunday evening when the normally bustling city was fairly empty and see what we could capture. My Fujifilm X-Pro1 was charged and ready to shoot, I brought a single YongNuo YN-560 witha a cheap ebay wireless trigger and the XF 35mm f/1.4, XF 55-200 f/3.5-4.8 R LM OIS and my favorite legacy lens I own: a Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 Ai. The 35mm was pretty much bolted to the camera for the entire duration of the shoot, the only exception being the shots of Nathan on the bench where I wanted to compress the background a little. Most of the photos were lit with the single YongNuo off camera, either handheld or I had Ashweena assist me with holding the light.
Here are the resulting photos.
